A Reflection of Choreographic Tasks/Processes

In this blog I will be talking about the journey I take, whilst producing my solo choreography performance, working in a group of 3.

In the first Practical choreography class, we were introduced to 6 compelling images, and had to annotate them in depth.

There was one picture that particularly astonished me, and I voted for this later on in class in our blind vote, to help decide which groups we would work in.

This was the image I chose:

(Kurucz, 2018)

I would love to focus in to the idea of feeling trapped and isolated, as I felt the image had a clear box which the character was caught in, and I had an interesting idea where the character (me as the soloist) could be glamorous and content when in this certain boxed area, however as soon as they step out of the box, they lose all happiness and become dejected and sorrowful, showing the audience that their true feelings are usually invisible to the naked eye.

Additionally, this could relate to social media, and how on Instagram a photo you share in one small box, could simply be concealing the weakened soul that’s confined behind.

In our second practical choreography class we looked into Merce Cunningham, and his significant technique for choreography which is known as the chance method that meant sequences of movements were sometimes determined on the night of performances by the tossing of a coin. (Sergeant, 2019)

Looking into Cunningham’s technique was absorbing, his reinvention of choreography stunned those performing and those watching, the liberating “modern style” was something he was said to have ‘religiously’ executed throughout his career.

So in our class we used the rolling of a dice and the flipping of a coin to determine a sequence of movements, to create a short choreographic piece. I found the use of chance method challenging, but also extremely freeing as it gave you the chance to integrate two movements that may usually not coincide.
