Evaluation of Final Performance.

In my opinion I think the idea of my solo was portrayed really well, as I managed to successfully, show the difference between the movements inside and outside the box idea that came from my original stimulus, I feel like my performance on the day could have gone better as with not being able to practice because of my injury I found it very difficult to pick it back up on the day, especially with the small changes I made to the choreography that took away the jumps and the big impact that they had on my story line. I felt like I could’ve added more elements of performance specifically with facial expressions if I had, a little more time to rehearse, as I felt the idea of the “fake” happiness in the box could’ve been emphasised a lot more and reflecting back on it that is definitely what I would change to enhance. I think throughout my choreographic journey looking at different techniques and devices used by different practitioners has really enhanced my piece and even whilst performi...

Further Creative Development

I personally feel the idea of my piece is successfully presented through the movements I have created and the space I have covered. I hope to find places to include more facial expressions and if I had longer to work on this piece the use of performance would be a very significant part.  I want the piece to show that no matter how much someone tries to force themselves to be happy, and present themselves to the world in that fake positive manner, they will still be struggling on the inside, and so just because someone may come accross as "okay" it doesn't necessarily mean they are, and that is an important message for everyone to be aware of. After my feedback from my teacher it has been advised that I adjust the ending from having a large jump and dramatic ending to something that is simple and therefore more effective. To do this i hope to take away the jump and just take a deep breath and then fall forwards onto the floor, hopefully complimenting the intense music supp...

Crsytal Pite Flight Pattern

Image
At the very beginning of this section of flight pattern, we see a dancer facing the back, cradling something in her arms that would make you assume it was a baby, when she turns to face the front, we soon see this is not the case as she is just cradling a piece of clothing. The fact she holds an empty piece of clothing in such a caring yet distressing way to me suggests maybe she is mourning the death of her child or struggling with separation between herself and a loved one. The whole way through I could only describe the girls’ actions and facial expressions as distraught, she is constantly looking around as if in panic, it could be that she is trying to find someone or escape from something, but it is clear she is fraught. She also begins very low to the ground, with a lot of deep plies and floorwork, and she seems very grounded, as if she can’t bring herself back up. When she starts to stand up and fully extend her body, I noticed that soon after, she throws away the clothin...

Continued Creative Development

My piece has really started to come together now that I have progressed into my next big section of choreography, as mentioned in my last creative development blog I had begun with movements all contained in a small box like amount of space, and the feedback I received from my teachers was that I needed to travel more and use the space, so with the next part of my choreography I added in a section where I run around and turn in a circle the whole way round the studio, my reason for this is that it emphasises that I am still lost even if I have escaped the box and aren’t “physically” trapped, I’m still trapped in my own mind and feelings whilst dancing this role. I also added in a floor section that is supposed to widen the variety of levels used and emphasise the desperation felt in the soloist. At this point I have noticed there is a step I have repeated a few different times throughout this choreographic process and so moving forwards I would like to make sure that I find another p...

Crystal Pite- Solo Echo

Image
The first thing I noticed when watching the solo echo trailer, was that in the background there were gentle moving snowflakes, which gave me the impression it was set in winter. This to me creates an atmosphere of love, and devotion, and reminds me of the feeling of Christmas and being surrounded by family and warmth. However, all the dancers are wearing black or dark grey which in my opinion, completely juxtaposes my first thought as that would suggest something darker, or sinister and more isolated. Another thing I noticed was, there is usually at least two people dancing at the same time, they may be doing slightly different movements, but it always looks like the dancers are bouncing off of each other like an “echo” would. However, in one moment when we see someone dancing passionately as a soloist, another dancer seems to rush in to help, grabbing his hand, I feel this is some kind of reminder that they are always there for each other, “you are never alone”. The dancers use a ...

Creative Development: A Reflection On My Process So Far

As mentioned in a previous blog my stimulus is the glam jail photo. The message I would like to convey from this is the idea of feeling trapped inside yourself, in a situation where you view the outside world in an utopian way. However realistically you are never happy or content with your life, even when you break the wall of anxiety you hide behind you may still not be satisfied with yourself. I also wanted to expand on how the jail box looks like an upload on social media, emphasising the consuming effect social media can have on everyone, and how a post online can be a fake representation of how someone looks, feels, and thinks. The First step I made in my choreographic process was choosing the music, the music is called Escape Room, written by Bryan Tyler and John Carey. Escape room is a horror film and the music I am using is the main theme tune so as you can imagine it is very intense and dramatic. Ironically not only does the title fit with our stimulus and theme but it also ...

Critique 1 - Crystal Pite, The Revisor

Image
Right from the beginning of this clip we see this piece is filled with exaggerated facial expressions, I can see immediately how dominant acting is in this dance piece. Another thing I noticed straight away, is this performance is embellished with extravagant costumes that really help to create a concept in your imagination right from the beginning, and I feel that this concept fits somewhere along the line of war or politics. In my opinion it also looks like the dancers are even mouthing words, for example if the music had spoken words throughout, they could be talking along with that or perhaps they are just mouthing words significant to the subject and theme of the piece. The Performance is also carried through with a lot of mime, which emphasises the importance of dancers being able to act and perform, as sometimes a Choreographer may decide that this dramatic theme will carry the piece, which I feel is clearly what Crystal Pite has done in this wonderful creation. Regards to the m...
