Crystal Pite- Solo Echo

Image
The first thing I noticed when watching the solo echo trailer, was that in the background there were gentle moving snowflakes, which gave me the impression it was set in winter. This to me creates an atmosphere of love, and devotion, and reminds me of the feeling of Christmas and being surrounded by family and warmth. However, all the dancers are wearing black or dark grey which in my opinion, completely juxtaposes my first thought as that would suggest something darker, or sinister and more isolated. Another thing I noticed was, there is usually at least two people dancing at the same time, they may be doing slightly different movements, but it always looks like the dancers are bouncing off of each other like an “echo” would. However, in one moment when we see someone dancing passionately as a soloist, another dancer seems to rush in to help, grabbing his hand, I feel this is some kind of reminder that they are always there for each other, “you are never alone”. The dancers use a ...

Creative Development: A Reflection On My Process So Far

As mentioned in a previous blog my stimulus is the glam jail photo. The message I would like to convey from this is the idea of feeling trapped inside yourself, in a situation where you view the outside world in an utopian way. However realistically you are never happy or content with your life, even when you break the wall of anxiety you hide behind you may still not be satisfied with yourself. I also wanted to expand on how the jail box looks like an upload on social media, emphasising the consuming effect social media can have on everyone, and how a post online can be a fake representation of how someone looks, feels, and thinks. The First step I made in my choreographic process was choosing the music, the music is called Escape Room, written by Bryan Tyler and John Carey. Escape room is a horror film and the music I am using is the main theme tune so as you can imagine it is very intense and dramatic. Ironically not only does the title fit with our stimulus and theme but it also ...

Critique 1 - Crystal Pite, The Revisor

Image
Right from the beginning of this clip we see this piece is filled with exaggerated facial expressions, I can see immediately how dominant acting is in this dance piece. Another thing I noticed straight away, is this performance is embellished with extravagant costumes that really help to create a concept in your imagination right from the beginning, and I feel that this concept fits somewhere along the line of war or politics. In my opinion it also looks like the dancers are even mouthing words, for example if the music had spoken words throughout, they could be talking along with that or perhaps they are just mouthing words significant to the subject and theme of the piece. The Performance is also carried through with a lot of mime, which emphasises the importance of dancers being able to act and perform, as sometimes a Choreographer may decide that this dramatic theme will carry the piece, which I feel is clearly what Crystal Pite has done in this wonderful creation. Regards to the m...

My Chosen Practitioner

I really enjoyed looking at crystal Pites work in "The Revisor" specifically because i love the fact that  her work was very based of real life scenarios, and I saw in a video she explained that sometimes she will have no idea what choreography she will give the dancers until she is in the room and practically improvising it. I found this very interesting and inspiring because I believe sometimes the best work can just come from the spontaneity of the human brains creativity. When I was watching Crystal Pites work with her dancers she was very collaborative and inclusive, and she would even try and include some of their ideas and appreciate their input. Furthermore the trailer for The Revisor, shows she includes quite a lot of mime which I believe helps with the portrayal of the storyline to the audience. As it can include every day gestures and repetition which also make the piece extremely intruiging. Crystal Pite has already gained a few awards over her choreography jour...
